reading a thing about the problems of being a country with racial/cultural/ethnic/religious diversity .. it says that 'race' is so important in the American psyche that part of the justification for Southern Secession was that southerners were a different (higher, of course) race than the 'Yankee'.. the idea being that Northerners were descended from the Puritan Roundheads, who were ...

There was a link on Digg today to an onion article written in 2001. But it was one of the comments that made me laugh the most: I know you psychotic nutball Christians have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. 1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are...

I just realized what time of the week it is...so fitting. A local bible school managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, IMHO. What started out as a Norman Rockwell painting, turned into yet another crass attempt to proselytize a captive (literally) audience. "Gainesville State is a maximum-security correctional facility with a population of about 290 males ages 12-19. Every ...

Maybe there is a God.... ~j UPDATE: Focus on the Family announced this afternoon that 202 jobs will be cut companywide — more than 20 percent of its workforce. Initial reports bring the total number of remaining employees to around 950. Focus on the Family is poised to announce major layoffs to its Colorado Springs-based ministry and media empire today. This weekend we took an amazing kayak trip down Topock Gorge on the Colorado River. It was a great time for our whole family. Saturday, the day of the paddle, dawned with heavy winds that convinced some of the kayakers to stay in camp. Our daughter, Bean, was looking to become one of those. Schred and I looked at the water, though, and realized that it would mostly be a tailwind and ...

Ransom? You don't pay ransom. You attack and kill the buggers. You do that a few times and they won't pirate anymore because it's not worth the risk. We see here what happens when you pay...they get better armed and more brazen. Duh. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1226404 760483&amp... 1pg

NYT columnist Kristof has just written a celebration of Obama's intellectualism: The second most remarkable thing about his election is that American voters have just picked a president who is an open, out-of-the-closet, practicing intellectual. [...] Perhaps John Kennedy was the last president who was unapologetic about his intellect and about luring the best minds to his cabinet. ...

Tomorrow the Supreme Court will be hearing a case concerning the Summum church in Utah. The Summum have been denied in their request to erect a monument in Pleasant Grove City professing the Summum Church's "Seven Aphorisms." Already in the same public square is a monument inscribed with the Christian Ten Commandments (not the Catholic ones) and the Summum church has merely asked for ...

I have just read a thread wherein some folks question how we can really know Obama is smart, because maybe his academic accomplishments are mostly due to affirmative action. http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=27179055 First of all, there is a wealth of direct evidence of his intelligence. Look at how he speaks off the cuff. Read his books, which he actually conceived of and ...

Ok, I'm tired of hearing about how great John McCain was. But there's something else I've heard several times lately that I'm getting really sick of. I'm getting sick of hearing about how people who support gay marriage should stop treating everyone who opposes it like they are bigots. I'm tired of hearing that, as with abortion, reasonable people might disagree on this issue, and ...

As I understand it, Prop 8 just passed in California denies a homosexual couple the option to be married. Does it also deny them to enter into a 'civil union'? In other words, does it deny a homosexual couple the advantages of a marriage or just the ceremony of marriage?

BSC Neighbor - 14 new posts

Yep I have a BSC neighbor. Oh not the lady who faithfully takes her meds and, unlike a lot of mentally ill people, loves to go for her monthly visits at the MHMR office. I'm fine with her and will even confess to a certain fondness. But her 37 year old nephew who has just moved in with her after his parents finally got fed up and showed him the door ? dear lord what an asswhistle and ...
